Transformations with Dianne Shaver and her guest Cleo Brown, ON AIR FROM MARCH 26TH

Purpose of my talks & my writing: Using history to create insight and introspection that leads to change.  My primary focus areas are race relations and voting.

What needs to change to make this a more equitable culture, especially in the South in the United States? This hugely impacts Charleston, South Carolina as the first port of entry for slaves taken from Africa.  Many have said that the healing must take place in Charleston for that very reason. How can we wake people up to prejudicial laws and cultural norms that exclude African Americans or view them as less than which is woven into the very fabric of the culture.

Things have been heating up in the United States in the last couple of years in the area of race relations and in the 2020 election, it will have a huge impact. There are many candidates of color declaring for the Democratic presidential nomination.

This interview with Cleo Brown highlights ways that the white culture still views non-whites and ways that we can make needed changes.  She sees education as one of the first things that have to happen.

Among her recommendations are movies, books and news sources: Cleo would recommend that everyone definitely watch the movie “Selma” and the Documentary “Eyes on the Prize”.

I would recommend: My book, “Witness to the Truth”, not because it is my book but because it works because people say that it makes them understand today much better (see a few reader comments attached). The story is not only laid out logically so that the reader can clearly understand how one incident in history is tied to the next period in history but because there is the main character, it feels more like you are just reading a good story and you learn valuable lessons quite by accident.  It explains not only what happened, but often why something happens.

Other books I’d recommend would be Coming of Age in Mississippi by Anne Moody & The Warmth of Other Suns by Isabel Wilkerson. I would also recommend using NPR for your news source in order to hear reporting that gives depth and a more balanced coverage by presenting different views.
